The Ultimate Safety Checklist: Potential Hazards in Your Home

Your house is the space you deserve to feel safe in. However, every homeowner needs to be aware of potential hazards that may be putting you at risk. While some are hard to miss, like broken glass in your window, others can go unnoticed for days, weeks or even years. We at SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly & Richmond Counties recommend you take mere moments out of your busy schedule to inspect your home for these hazards. Our safety checklist will help ensure your ‘home sweet home’ stays safe.
- Smoke Detectors: Test your smoke alarms once a month and replace their batteries when needed.
- Outlet Safety: Be sure to never plug more than one high-wattage piece of equipment into an outlet at a time. Check your outlets monthly to ensure they are not overheating.
- Extension Cords: All cords should be removed from entryways and never placed under rugs or mats.
- Poison Control: Poisonous chemicals of any kind should be locked away in a storage closet or cabinet and kept out of reach of children.
- Escape Routes: Take time to plan and map an escape route incase of a fire. You should have at least two exits included in your plan.
- Chimney Sweeps: Your chimney should be inspected and cleaned before use each year. This helps prevent any soot build up, which is a known fire hazard.
- Child-Proofing: Keep your family safe by covering any outlets not in use and storing controlled substances in a locked cabinet.
