Don't Let Mold Become a Growing Issue in Your Home

5/15/2021 (Permalink)

Our Mold Damage Techniques Can Restore Your Home

There is a presence of mold inside your residence. It is essential to call a professional right away to handle the situation because ignoring the problem can result in an infestation rather quickly. Contacting us for the job makes sense because our skilled technicians can restore your home to its pre-mold state when possible.

SERVPRO mold restoration teams are very diligent. You can trust them to take safety precautions during the containment phase to prevent mold from spreading to other areas of your home. First, our technicians seal areas such as windows, hallways, and doors with plastic sheeting to contain airborne spores. Plus, they block air vents to keep mold spores from spreading throughout your home via the heating and cooling system.

After our techs seal the affected areas, the removal stage can begin. The surfaces we clean mold from can include porous surfaces like carpeting. In many cases, we use anti-fungal sprays to eliminate mold and to stop mold growth. Typically, we clean non-porous surfaces like metal or glass with wet sponges and detergents. Techs may also utilize a HEPA-filtered vacuum to remove layers of mold from non-porous surfaces as well as to pick up and trap mold spores. Crews may also use agitation methods such as wire brushing, sanding, or damp wiping to get rid of mold.

After the containment and cleaning stages, our techs can begin to dry the area. One of the best pieces of equipment for this phase is an axial fan. These fans are high-velocity and quickly push damp air from the structure, which helps speed up the drying process. The team may also use air movers to draw in dry and warm that aids with moisture elimination. Dehumidifiers can also be put in place to reduce moisture levels inside the structure

What Does SERVPRO Do That I Cannot Do Myself?

SERVPRO Has Access to Professional High-Quality Equipment and Expert Knowledge

Fire damage in your home is not straight forward. Depending on the type of fire, visible damage may vary. For instance, a protein kitchen fire can result in a sticky film-like residue all over your kitchen. Protein fires require a different type of cleanup process than other kinds of fires. Professionals like our SERVPRO technicians can quickly identify the required cleaning techniques for your specific situation. Another major factor is removing the malodor caused by smoke traveling to all corners of your home.

What Deodorization Equipment Does SERVPRO Use?

  • ULV (Wet Fogger)Uses cold fogging techniques; the fog comes in the form of small droplets that use low-pressure air stream to dissipate throughout your home.
  • Thermal Fogger (Dry Fogger):Uses a heater to vaporize a deodorant solution that sprays in a fog.
  • Ozone Generator:Produces ozone that penetrates and oxidizes odor. It requires extra precautions as concentrated ozone can be toxic.

What Safety Precautions Does SERVPRO Take During Deodorization?

  • During fogging and ozone use, residents, pets, and plants need to leave the home.
  • Technicians ensure proper ventilation for extended amounts of time (24hr plus) after fogging and ozone generator use.
  • Technicians wear appropriate PPE while using the equipment.

SERVPRO Acts Fast to Inspect and Dry Interior and Exterior Walls for Flood Damage

5/13/2021 (Permalink)

Any size flood can bring about significant damage to your home. Whatever caused the flooding, water must be removed from all walls to ensure lingering moisture does not bring on more damage. The longer that water sits in the walls, the higher the chance you have of structural damage and mold or mildew growth.

What does SERVPRO do to dry interior and exterior walls after a flood?
After arrival onsite, our team puts a plan of action in place to address your flood damage. Our trucks are equipped with submersible portable and truck-mounted pumps that allow us to remove massive amounts of water from your basement and interior. We then remove any flood-damaged contents to begin drying the area with water extractors, dehumidifiers, and air movers.

•    For Interior Walls – Flood cuts might be required several inches above the water line so that we can remove any damaged drywall. This helps expose any pockets of the remaining water and allows us to increase airflow in small wall cavities to facilitate drying.
•    For Exterior Walls – SERVPRO technicians use moisture sensors to locate any areas where moisture is lingering. If we detect higher moisture levels, holes may be drilled at the bottom portion of the wall to allow water to drain. A hole may also be drilled at the top of the wall to force air into the cavity, speeding moisture removal.

Our team also completes a full inspection of your home’s exterior to ensure you have ample drainage away from the building. This is important for helping to avoid future moisture damage if you have cinder block walls. Cinder block can hold moisture, which could lead to mold infestations if not addressed appropriately.

Regardless of the flood damage that you have in your area, our team at SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties is here to help. Call us 24/7 for emergency service at (704) 474-7190.

SERVPRO Has Powerful Extraction Tools to Handle Flood Damage, Including Removal of Contaminated Water Throughout Your Home

5/13/2021 (Permalink)

Nobody ever expects to be ankle-deep in floodwater throughout their home. However, once a storm comes through, you need to have the ability to remove the water and moisture from your interior. Failing to do so promptly leaves your home subject to secondary damage and exponential restoration costs. Enlist a reputable restoration team's services to address your floodwater damage to have prompt service and fair pricing. SERVPRO is always on call - 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and ensures rapid results to get back to your daily routine.

What Can Flooding Do to My Home?

Any flood damage can become very costly to fix as time goes on. The longer water and contaminants are left to fester, the more secondary damage can set in. If water began migrating throughout your entire first flood, it becomes imperative that you have not only quick extraction but also professional moisture detection to find any hidden pockets.

With our initial assessment of your home, we take a look at how floodwater moves through the different structural and building materials in that path. After knowing the severity of the spread, we can focus our attention on areas that need it most. In many situations where contaminated floodwater infiltrates a home, our crew has to perform controlled demolition. Different elements that we address include:

  • Drywall –One of the more common materials that might be deemed unsalvageable in as little as 24 hours after initial exposure to standing water is drywall. Moisture wicks its way up the drywall, which can lead to warping or crumbling. Our crew can perform flood cuts several inches above the saturation portion and then replace it with all-new materials. The walls get finished off to bring them back to preloss condition.
  • Floors –Various flooring types can become severely damaged when exposed to standing water for an extended period, such as vinyl, linoleum, carpeting, and hardwood. If your flooring shows signs of bloating, bubbling, cupping, or warping, the best course of action is to have it removed and replaced by our trusted contractors.
  • Wood Trim –We often remove wood trim in situations where it becomes saturated with the threat of contaminated water. Should your drywall and insulation call for replacement in certain areas, we will more than likely need to replace the trim as well. Our crew can sometimes remove and replace the baseboards alone when the drywall is in good condition.

How Can I Tell if the Floodwater is Contaminated?

You and your family should stay clear of flooding within your home as much as possible. If you can, block off the flood zone to not expose and help limit water migration into other rooms. You can shut doors and put blankets or towels down to keep the water at bay until we arrive. Once our crew is on the scene, we can perform sample testing to determine how contaminated the floodwater is. When water comes into your home from outdoors with storm floods, it tends to bring contaminants like:

  • Fecal matter
  • Silt and mud
  • Fuel or chemicals
  • Fertilizers
  • Pathogenic organisms
  • Vermin that may bite
  • Random debris, and more

Once the water gets tested, we can treat the flood zone before beginning the cleanup process, which helps to keep hazardous droplets from becoming airborne as our team works on extraction and drying. After your interior is dry, we also have a broad range of professional-grade antibacterial and antimicrobial cleaning agents to thoroughly sanitize all surfaces. Should there be any contamination concerns, SERVPRO can perform further testing to ensure all bacteria have been eliminated.

Why Should I Call SERVPRO When I Have Flood Issues?

Our team features technicians trained following the standards set forth by the Institution of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC). We are available seven days a week, around the clock, to get to work when you need us most. Some of the professional services that we have to offer our customers include:

  • Trucks from our Green Fleet stocked with the latest equipment and cleaning agents

Steps SERVPRO Takes to Restore Commercial Water Damaged Carpet

5/9/2021 (Permalink)

Restoration of Wet Carpet from Commercial Water Damage

Very little smells worse than wet carpeting from a commercial water damage event. This odor is even more significant when the water sat overnight and discovered the next morning. Because of the way water degrades quickly, fast clean-up is vital to stop the investment in the property's carpeting from becoming a water loss casualty.

Since SERVPRO technicians are available 24-hours daily to cleanup commercial properties, the fast action makes the difference between whether it is a clean, gray or black water mitigation for the property.

Safety First in Water Cleanup Situations

SERVPRO technicians test the water to ensure there are no harmful bacteria or chemicals present and choose the appropriate extraction methods for fast removal of the water. If exposure to water included sewage or sat longer than 48 hours before cleanup, carpet requires removal per biohazard disposal methods.

Carpet Cleanup Requires Specialized Applications

Due to the porous nature of commercial carpet and padding, a standard wet/dry vacuum cannot do the job sufficiently to avoid odors or the potential for mold growth. SERVPRO has powerful equipment with specific attachments to work on carpet and eliminate most of the water for faster drying.

Mold is Always a Concern

After water damage, particularly in porous materials such as carpet fibers or behind baseboards, technicians apply proactive efforts to limit the possibility of mold growth. These efforts include thorough drying, antibacterial cleaning solutions, and the use of antimicrobial sealants.

Deodorizing is Crucial

Water leaves its unique signature scent, and SERVPRO technicians often use a multi-layered approach to treating odor left behind, especially in the carpet fibers. Covering foul odors is not enough, and the technicians deploy equipment designed to neutralize airborne odors at the molecular level.

Sealing After Cleaning Keeps Carpet Looking Great Longer

Once the carpet in the commercial property has soils and residues removed, the application of a professional-grade fiber sealer assists in keeping high traffic areas looking cleaner for longer and with regular maintenance can work to extend the life of your commercial carpet thereby protecting your investment.

Call SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties today at (704) 474-7190 when you need fast action against commercial water damage in your New Haven business property. They arrive fast and work to get your business reopened without a sign of the damage "Like it never even happened."

A Few Commercial Water Damage Mistakes That You Should Avoid

5/9/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Damage Swelling Subfloor Damages Tile

One of the reasons many owners install ceramic tile in commercial offices is that the tile can withstand lots of foot traffic and lasts much longer than carpeting. Tile also maintains the original finish and can be easily cleaned. Few people realize that tile can be damaged when a water leak floods a tile floor.

SERVPRO has been responding commercial water damages in your area for many years. Our team's experience and certifications allow us to provide emergency services for water, fire, and storm damage whenever it occurs on a 24/7 basis.

Why Tile Floors May Crack

Whenever a water leak occurs, the water can spread rapidly over a tile floor. With nothing to absorb the water, such as a carpet, water may cover the entire floor in minutes. If the leak is identified quickly and repaired, many customers assume all that is needed is to mop up the surface water, allow it to dry for a few hours, and normal business activities can be resumed.

Tile and the grout are always sealed at installation. However, over time, cracks may appear in the grout, or there may have been areas that remained porous. Water sitting on a tile floor can seep in between the cracks or around edges to the subfloor below. Once the subfloor becomes wet, the wood may swell, placing pressure on the tile, causing further lifting or even cracking of tiles in the area.

SERVPRO can help remove standing water from your commercial building as well as test subfloors to ensure the floor is dry and not cause damage sometime later. If the subfloor can be reached from the floor below, drying from the bottom may be considered. Small holes can be drilled into the grout to assess the moisture levels. We also use non-penetrating meters to assess moisture levels.

Let SERVPRO help to prevent tile breakage or loosening. We can clean up after a water leak and monitor the subfloor to avoid potential future problems.

Call SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties at (704)-474-7190 for 24/7 service. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Garage Fire Damage Can Be Mitigated By Professionals

5/9/2021 (Permalink)

Garage fires are not something the average homeowner has to consider every day, but according to the US Fire Administration, approximately 6,600 garage fires occur in the United States every year. The most prevalent cause of these fires is electrical failure. A light with faulty wiring that catches fire near flammable materials like a wooden workbench can be all it takes for fire damage to affect your home.

When fire damage occurs in your residence, SERVPRO technicians and franchise owners have extensive training in cleanup and safety.  Commercial-grade materials and comprehensive education mean that homeowners get a safer, more thorough clean that protects their home and possessions.

Tips for Preventing Garage Fires
• Keep your garage clean. Not only does clutter make it easier to address a fire when it happens, but it also means fewer materials available to stoke the flames.

• Store flammable materials separately. Put aerosols, motor oil, propane, paint, and other flammable items in a shed or other area unconnected to the home.

• Avoid overloading outlets. Overloaded outlets are one of the most frequent causes of garage fires, so be mindful of electricity use to minimize risks. Using extension cords can create additional risk for wire failures that can start a fire.

• Install a heat alarm. Many garages do not have smoke alarms and may set them off accidentally due to hot temperatures or exposure to dust and fumes. Heat alarms can alert you to unusual changes in temperature that indicate a fire more reliably.

SERVPRO Can Restore Your Possessions
After a team reaches your home, they can get started right away on addressing soot, fumes, and residues generated by a garage fire. SERVPRO uses a variety of advanced cleaning techniques to restore items, including wet and dry cleaning, immersion in eco-friendly cleaners, and much more. If your tools and home repair items are covered in soot, ash, or residues, a combination of immersion, abrasives, spray cleaning, and other techniques may be utilized for restoration.

Lingering odors are common after a fire and can be combated with a combination of industrial cleaners, adequate ventilation, odor counteractant beads, and commercial-grade deodorization. If air is particularly dirty, HEPA air scrubbers can catch odor-causing particulates as small as 0.3 microns in size.

SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties is Faster to Any Size Disaster, no matter when it occurs in your home. Call (704)-474-7190 today to get speedy and reliable emergency service.

3 Most Common Causes of Fires

5/9/2021 (Permalink)

While some house fires are relatively minor, they generally destroy belongings and disrupt lives. We’ve seen first-hand how stressful a fire can be, which is why we’re advocates for fire prevention. Below are some of the most common causes of house fires in your area!

  1. Cooking-related fires. We all love to cook, but did you know cooking-related fires are the number one cause of house fires in the entire U.S? We certainly encourage you to continue cooking, but practice kitchen safety and don’t leave the kitchen unattended while it’s in use!
  1. Electrical fires. In today’s society, electronics and appliances are an essential part of our lives. They can be a great convenience, but electrical fires are a problem that many homes face each year. Electrical fires can occur for a number of reasons, and this article offers some great tips.
  1. Heating equipment fires. Now that the cold seasons are here, most homes will start using heating equipment. While these are great for staying warm, the heat they generate can cause nearby flammable objects to catch fire. Whether it’s your fireplace or a space heater, keep this equipment at least 3 feet away from flammable objects!

The above are some of the most common causes of house fires in the area, but they are by no means the only ones. If you do have a house fire, know that our team at SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties is available 24/7 to clean up and restore your home’s fire damage!

Tornado Watch vs Tornado Warning

5/9/2021 (Permalink)

Meteorologists use a lot of different terms to describe weather patterns and conditions. In some cases, however, these terms convey important information to local audiences. As we approach summer, we might hear more about tornadoes and other storm systems. That’s why it’s important you know the difference between a “tornado watch” and a “tornado warning.”

Tornado Watch

Authorities issue a tornado watch when conditions are right for a tornado to form. While there isn’t an imminent threat in this situation, the conditions could worsen. In any event, when a tornado watch is issued, move indoors and keep an eye on the local news for updates.

Tornado Warning

A tornado warning is a more urgent alert that is only issued when a tornado has actually been spotted or when one is imminent. When this has been issued, you should move to a safe place in your home or shelter and wait there until it’s been deemed safe to do so.

Tornadoes are extremely powerful storms, so even if you and your family are safe, your home may not be. Fortunately, if you do have storm damage, our professional team at SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties is available 24/7 to clean up and restore your home!

What To Do if a Tree Falls On Your Roof

5/9/2021 (Permalink)

When a tree falls on your roof, it causes two problems: it damages your home’s structure, and it exposes your home to the elements. Each year, we get dozens of calls from people who have had trees fall on their roof and are unsure of what to do. It’s not a quick process, but there are a few steps you can take!

Remove the tree. This might seem like an obvious first step, but we’ve had countless calls from people who haven’t even removed the tree. Until the damaged area of your roof has been cleared, it can’t be covered. We recommend calling your local tree removal company.

Tarp exposed areas. Unless you’re lucky, a fallen tree will likely cause damage to your roof, generally leaving it exposed. To ensure outside elements don’t get in and cause more damage, you should have it tarped. In some cases, the tree removal company will do this for you, but if not, you will need to contact a roofing company.

Contact a roofing company. Even if the roof is tarped, you’ll need to contact a roofing company to determine the next phase of repairs. After all, the tarp is only a temporary solution!

Call a disaster restoration company (if applicable). If the tree fell because of a storm (or if a storm hits before the damage can be properly tarped), you’re likely going to have rain damage on the interior of your home. A water mitigation company will dry the affected areas and treat it with an antimicrobial treatment to prevent mold growth!

A fallen tree can cause a lot of damage and headache, but with the above steps, you can get your life back on track. If you have water damage  and need a disaster restoration company, our team at SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties are available 24/7 to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Cleaning and Restoring Damaged Items

4/28/2021 (Permalink)

Fire and water emergencies can bring homeowners many checklists, worries, and questions. The question of whether they will have to replace all clothing and textile items may plague many homeowners. During the process of cleaning and restoring, personal items and valuables are sorted to determine what is salvageable and what is not. Cleaning salvageable items is a part of the restoration process.

Traditional washing machines, home-owned or industrial, do not have the capability to properly clean water, mold, or fire damaged clothing. The Esporta Washing System cleans twice as much than a dry cleaner can. The Esporta cleans 90% of all damaged soft contents including clothing, bedding, stuffed animals, leather shoes or purses, and more.

The Esporta Washing System uses a hydraulic cleaning method. This method uses water as pressure to force contaminants out of any items. This system differs from a traditional washing machine, as a traditional machine uses blades or paddles to press against the items, proving to be ineffective against organic or inorganic contaminants.

The detergent used in the cleaning process is also what sets this washing system apart from other methods. The proprietary detergent is harsh on contaminants but gentle on the environment. The blend is free of any hazardous chemicals, proving to be kind to those using the washed items, anyone operating the machine, and to our planet.

SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties has accessibility to the Esporta it gives us an edge on our competitors in providing quick, quality service and ensuring as much of our customer’s contents are restored. Restoring and cleaning your salvageable items usually helps to expedite the process of dealing with an insurance claim and returning back to your normal life. SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties also eases the worries and many steps that comes with a fire or water damage emergency. We offer inspection, cleaning of both buildings and items, along with restoration.

New Homeowner Checklist: Mold Inspection

4/28/2021 (Permalink)

The home buying process can be stressful for potential new homeowners. There is plenty of paperwork to complete and long to-do lists.  On this to-do list, usually during the closing stages, there are home inspections that take place. These inspections are meant to take a detailed survey of your roof, plumbing, sewer lines and other major systems to look for any broken or damaged infrastructure. Among this checklist, should be inspecting for mold.

Mold has the tendency to quickly spread throughout a home. If left lingering, the damage can be costly. Home buying is already a huge financial endeavor for many people and adding to maintenance bills because of mold is not exactly a welcomed thought. Homeowners should make sure that mold assessment is conducted as one of their first steps. Due to its ambiguous physical state, mold damage is not always evident upon first glance; leaving this inspection to the professionals is best. A mold assessor is recommended as they have experiencing spotting tell-tale signs.

Mold can be found in homes and rooms especially, with poor ventilation that are constantly humid. Think of a bathroom constantly being exposed to moisture; mold growth is infamous in bathrooms. It is important to remember mold can also be found in brand new construction as well. A new tightly sealed building may have trapped moisture inside, that may not appear as an issue at first but can transform into a serious mold issue later.

Buying a home is a major investment. Just like with any financial endeavor, protecting your investment is important, making mold inspection a must-do before finalizing your purchase. In the case that mold is present you will need immediate mold remediation. SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties has years of experience in helping homeowners with their mold damage. Call us today 704-474-7190!

Preparing for a Storm

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know? Flooding is North Carolina’s second most common natural hazard. Many wether agencies are reporting that floods and hurricanes are becoming more extreme with each passing year. The damage caused by these intense storms can ruin homes or entire communities for weeks, months or even years. With storms like Hurricane Dorian hurtling through North Carolina, it is important that you know how to prepare for flood damage as best you can before it happens.

One of the best ways to prepare for flooding is to elevate any electrical components. This includes sockets, switches and wiring. These sources should be elevated at least twelve inches above expected flood levels. By elevating these components, you are preventing a potential safety hazard during the recovery and restoration process after the storm has passed.

Another great way to prepare for flooding is to waterproof your basement. While this can be a greater investment into your home, it pays off greatly if you reside in a region that experiences flooding often. Additionally, a battery-operated backup generator is a great machine to consider adding to your home incase of a power outage during a storm.

Moving your furniture and valuables to a safe area is an important step in the preparation process. Consider storing important documents like birth certificates and insurance policies in waterproof boxes or sealed bags.

Above all, the safety of you and your family is the most critical step in the preparation process. If flooding does occur, be sure to call SERVPRO for all of your flood damage restoration needs. Our office is ready to start your recovery and restoration plan to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage in Your Restaurant

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Local restaurants tend to use more water than your typical business. From cooking to cleaning, restaurants use water in almost every aspect of their work. Because of this, these businesses can be affected by water damage more severely than others. For example, sprinklers are necessary in every restaurant as fires are more typical in the kitchen. However, excessive water can lead to water damage and ruin carpet, cloths, fabric and food. Additionally, busted water pipes can leak or crack, causing serious damage to anything around it. Even water overflow from restrooms can create a major problem for a restaurant. If left untreated, mold can form and spread under carpet, tiles or in wall paneling. Textiles will lose their color and walls will stain from excess moisture.

Thankfully, SERVPRO is a choice solution for all of your commercial and water damage needs. Our specialists can answer any questions you may have about your restaurant recovery process. Additionally, our crew determines the type of water damage and creates an effective plan of action, resulting in a speedy start to your restoration process. SERVPRO’s team of trained professionals then begin water removal and extraction through our highly effective equipment. Water and moisture is pulled out of every surface and material found in the affected areas to ensure no mold can develop over time. Lastly, SERVPRO is able to restore your items through specialized cleaning techniques with industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Whatever type of water damage your restaurant may be experiencing, SERVPRO is here to help recover and restore your belongings. Our crew of trained professionals will ensure your restaurant is back in business as soon as possible and that your equipment is left “Like it never even happened.”

What is the ERP System and How Can It Help You?

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

With the innovations of SERVPRO’S Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) system, a business owner is able to upload individual portfolios of their business and locations to our servers. But what exactly does that mean for small businesses? In the event of an emergency at your business, like after a flood, fire or storm damage occurs, our technicians are able to view and obtain critical information before they even arrive on site. In critical situations, this can save valuable time and your business can benefit from faster response times. Additionally, our technicians receive more details about your situation, allowing them to create a more effective plan of action. So what are other ways businesses can benefit from this system?

Our ERP system allows businesses to create custom profiles for each business location or franchise. If multiple locations have been affected by the same disaster, our technicians are able to view each store layout and specifications so that we can put together the most effective plan for each location. This system enables business owners to avoid the confusion and strains that follow dealing with disasters in multiple business locations. Additionally, businesses with unique or complex layouts can store blueprints, eliminating time spent on finding water mains, pipes and electrical breakers. This cuts down on time used by technicians looking for critical sources on site. Older commercials buildings can be vulnerable to more severe water damage, making quick response time a top priority. Whether it be new or old, your business will benefit from the effectiveness of SERVPRO’S ERP system.

The Forms of Moisture in Materials

2/12/2020 (Permalink)

Removing moisture and drying materials can prove to be a difficult project depending on how the moisture is held within the surface. Understanding the different types of moisture will allow you to remove it more efficiently.

Surface Water

Surface water is the first type of moisture confronted during the drying process. This is the liquid moisture that sits on top of a material. This excess can be removed through various methods like extraction, mopping, wiping or pumping. After the removal process, all other remaining surface water can be easily dried by applying warm airflow to the material. Warm airflow applied directly to the material creates a quick and efficient evaporation process.

Free Water

Free water is moisture that has already absorbed into a material. This can happen when surfaces come in contact with water or are exposed to humidity in the air. Although this type of moisture is already absorbed into the material, it is still considered “free” water, as it has not chemically bonded with the material’s molecules. As airflow is applied to the material, free water begins to rise to the surface of the material and starts the  evaporation process. To create a faster evaporation process for free water, a higher temperature and a lower humidity ratio must be applied.

Bound Water

Bound Water is moisture that has been absorbed into a material, such as wood, as has chemically bonded with the cells of that material. This is a much slower evaporation and drying process. First, the chemical bond has to be broken from the wet areas of a material. A warm airflow is usually not enough to create this reaction. However, heating the wet material can increase the rate of evaporation. Creating heat within the material forces bound water to release its chemical bond and pushes the water to the surface.

Humidity, airflow and temperature are all important factors in the drying and evaporation process. Each of these aspects must be addressed depending on which type of moisture has come in contact with a surface or material. Knowing the differences between these types of moisture can better help you tackle these water damage issues.

How We 'SERV': Cleaning After A Fire

2/12/2020 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO, our goal is to restore your belongings, home or business to it’s pre-fire condition. Depending on the amount of damage and its severity, our SERVPRO experts must assess the needs of your property and find the most efficient clean up solution. But where do we begin?

First, our highly qualified team locates smoke residue by inspecting the afflicted area. This inspection starts at the source of the fire. We then follow its path and trace the distance of the smoke throughout your property. Next, we identify the type of residue left behind. Several types of residue may exist even within the same affected area. Our restorers will choose the best cleaning solution to address each type of residue.

Additionally, the type of afflicted surface is identified. Like residue, types of surfaces affect what methods and solutions will be used to most efficiently clean your belongings. We carefully inspect each aspect of this process to ensure that your materials are preserved. Using wet and dry cleaning processes, we are then able to remove residue particles from your surfaces. Lastly, we carefully dispose of all of the residue, debris and cleaning waste used in the process.

Each step of our Fire Restoration process is important to bring your property back to it’s preloss condition. Our detail-oriented team ensures that all of these steps are applied appropriately and that the most efficient methods are used to best ‘SERV’ you.

The Many Types of Spores and Where They Live

2/12/2020 (Permalink)

Close your eyes and picture a seed. It’s small, simple and ready to be carried away to find a home. Before mold forms, it starts off as a small spore, bearing the likeness of a seed. Spores can be smaller than a pinhead and undetectable to the eye. But inside of this spore are thousands of more spores. Once that spore is broken, these internal spores are released into the air. Airflow then carries these spores away until they find a place to land. When these spores find a surface to settle on, they may lie dormant or immediately begin to spread. Spores wait for the right environment to grow in, which are determined by temperature, food and moisture.  Mold typically grows best in temperatures between approximately sixty and eighty degrees. However, some forms of mold can withstand freezing temperatures or survive in one hundred degrees temperatures. It also feeds on organic materials in surfaces, like wood, drywall and natural fibers and is attracted to high moisture and humidity levels.

Wherever these conditions are present, mold may not be far behind. The combination of these conditions depends on the speed of which the mold grows. If you suspect mold in your home or place of business, do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO for all of your mold remediation needs. We can restore your property to it’s fullest potential and make it “Like it never even happened.”

The Ultimate Safety Checklist: Potential Hazards in Your Home

1/22/2020 (Permalink)

Your house is the space you deserve to feel safe in. However, every homeowner needs to be aware of potential hazards that may be putting you at risk. While some are hard to miss, like broken glass in your window, others can go unnoticed for days, weeks or even years. We at SERVPRO  of Anson, Stanly & Richmond Counties recommend you take mere moments out of your busy schedule to inspect your home for these hazards. Our safety checklist will help ensure your ‘home sweet home’ stays safe.

  1. Smoke Detectors: Test your smoke alarms once a month and replace their batteries when needed.
  2. Outlet Safety: Be sure to never plug more than one high-wattage piece of equipment into an outlet at a time. Check your outlets monthly to ensure they are not overheating.
  3. Extension Cords: All cords should be removed from entryways and never placed under rugs or mats.
  4. Poison Control: Poisonous chemicals of any kind should be locked away in a storage closet or cabinet and kept out of reach of children.
  5. Escape Routes: Take time to plan and map an escape route incase of a fire. You should have at least two exits included in your plan.
  6. Chimney Sweeps: Your chimney should be inspected and cleaned before use each year. This helps prevent any soot build up, which is a known fire hazard.
  7. Child-Proofing: Keep your family safe by covering any outlets not in use and storing controlled substances in a locked cabinet.

As a trusted leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly & Richmond Counties provides 24-hour residential and commercial services. Why Water Damage Can’t Wait

1/22/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage, when ignored, can be dangerous and devastating. It happens fast and before you know it, water can absorb and ruin porous materials. In the worse cases, standing water can cause significant and grave structural damage. The longer materials and possessions are exposed to water dictates the severity of the deterioration. Understanding how quickly water damage affects property can help you prevent serious erosion.

Within minutes of a dishwasher leak, water damage begins. Floors, furniture, rugs, and other possessions are soaked with excess moisture. This moisture will instantly take its toll on any structure it comes in contact with. Perhaps, you catch the leak immediately; or perhaps, you are at work or running errands and come home hours later to find this mess. Within those few hours, many types of damage can occur. Drywall begins to bloat with moisture and break down, metal surfaces tarnish and an unpleasant, musty smell fills the room. In as soon as 48 hours, mold spores begin to surface and wooden floorboards are warped and moldy.

So what can be done? Water damage occurs quickly and the first thing homeowners can do is turn off their water. If the floor is covered in an inch or more of water, the electricity should also be turned off immediately. Your next step is to call SERVPRO. As a trusted leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly & Richmond Counties provides 24-hour residential and commercial services. As a locally owned and operated business, we’re dedicated to being faster to any size disaster, with the training, equipment, and expertise to handle your restoration and cleaning needs.

SERVPRO History

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

"The Carolina Sweeper" Letter

Ever wondered where SERVPRO originated from?

Water Category- How to know!

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage to an home's interior!

There are 3 different categories of water:

Category 1 Water – That which is clean at the releasing source and does not pose a hazard if consumed by humans. Category 1 water may become progressively contaminated as it mixes with soils on or within floor coverings or building assemblies (walls, decking, subflooring). Time and temperature, which promote the growth and amplification of microorganisms in water can cause Category 1 water to degrade.

Examples of category 1 water are:

    • burst water pipes
    • failed supply lines on appliances
    • vertically falling rainwater (water that does not hit the ground before entering the structure)

Category 2 Water – That which begins with some degree of contamination and could cause sickness or discomfort if consumed by humans. As with Category 1 water, time and temperature can cause Category 2 water to become progressively more contaminated.

Examples of category 2 water:

    • Washing Machine Over flow
    • Water from dishwasher
    • Used bath water

Category 3 Water – That which is highly contaminated and could cause death or serious illness if consumed by humans.

Examples of category 3 water:

    • sewage
    • rising flood water from rivers and streams
    • ground surface water flowing horizontally into homes

There are many different factors that could contribute to the category of water, it may not always be clear. If you have any questions be sure to always ask a qualified professional. SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties would be happy to assist you with any questions you may have.

Carpet Cleaning Tips from SERVPRO

6/15/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly & Richmond Counties offers carpet cleaning services to residential or commercial companies. When it comes to carpet stains be sure to attend to the situation as soon as possible. The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. Here are some helpful hints on spot cleaning carpets:

Always pre-test before you begin cleaning! Choose an inconspicuous spot to use your cleaning solution. Dampen a white cloth with your cleaning solution, and blot carpet and inspect carefully for dye transfer or other changes in appearance.

Food – Drinks – Blood

Rinse the area with hot water and blot with a clean white towel. Mix 1 tablespoon of #485 StainZap into 16 oz. of hot water and apply to the affected area. Allow to dry 15 to 30 minutes and the stain should “disappear”. Rinse the area thoroughly with water and blot dry.

Sticky Spills

Scrape or blot up the excess spill. Dampen a sponge with a carpet and upholstery cleaner, and blot the area with your sponge until the residue is removed. If some color remains, follow the outline above for food and drink.

Urine – Feces

Rinse the area with hot water and blot dry. Apply a carpet and upholstery cleaner to a sponge and apply to the affected area. Blot up with a damp towel. If an odor persists, apply an odor and stain remove product. If the stain remains, follow up with the steps outlined for food and drinks.

Candle wax – Nail polish

For wax, melt and absorb wax with a warm iron over an absorbent cloth and blot with SERVPRO Solvent Spotter. For nail polish, blot with a non acetate nail polish remover until the stain is gone.

Cosmetics – Ink

Rinse the area with hot water and blot. Apply a carpet and upholstery cleaner to the area and blot it dry. If any stain remains, follow up with the steps outlined above for food and drink.

If all else fails...let the professionals handle those carpets while you relax!! Call your local SERVPRO today at 704-474-7190

SERVPRO Tips on How To Prevent Sewage Back-ups

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

Nobody likes to have a sewage back-up right?? Here are a few tips to prevent this issue in the future!!

  • Never pour grease down the drain. Grease looks like a liquid when you’re done cooking, but that’s because it’s still hot, hot, hot! As soon as grease hits your cold pipes, it cools down and becomes a solid, sticking to the pipes’ insides and trapping food residue.
  • Don’t flush those solids!
This includes disposable diapers, hygiene products, or any other items that do not dissolve in water. Aim for the trash can, not the toilet!
  • Avoid throwing wet wipes into the toilet.
Even if the label says “flushable.” They can still become stuck in your pipes, especially if there are other things already trapped down there.
  • Beware long hair!
Hair is a major cause of pipe blockage, so instead of watching your hair go down (or not go down) the drain in the shower, take some action! Pick up any hair gathered around your drain and throw it out into the trash.
  • Never throw paper towels down the toilet.
Paper towels are built for absorption and durability, so they don’t break down easily when flushed; this often ends up causing issues in your sewer line.
  • Keep an eye on large trees growing near your sewer lines.
Trees are known for growing roots deep into the ground and causing movements or breaks in your pipes. So, it’s important to check nearby sewer lines and have them moved or repaired before the roots take over.

Electrical Tips For Your Home

6/1/2018 (Permalink)

  • Routinely check your electrical appliances for cuts and breaks in their cords, on the side of caution and replace any appliance that has a bad cord, overheats, shorts out or gives off smoke or sparks. In addition, if a cord has 3-prongs, don’t remove the extra prong. The third prong is necessary to ground the appliance to prevent electrical shocks.
  • Ensure your home is equipped with GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets near any areas that are close to water such as your kitchen area, bathrooms, laundry room, the garage or outdoor circuits. A GFCI outlet will automatically disconnect power when a plugged in electric appliance comes in contact with water or begins to “leak” electricity. These types of outlets can protect you and your family from fatal electrical shocks.
  • Examine your electrical cords periodically and discard any which are frayed or do not fit snugly into an outlet. Never secure a cord in place with staples and prevent overheating by not running them under furniture or carpeting, behind baseboards or near baseboard heating.
  • Never overload extension cords or wall sockets with too many appliances. If you need more electrical outlets, have them installed. It’s worth the money to have it done correctly and to code.
  • Periodically check your outlets and switches to see if they are hot to the touch. If so, get a licensed electrician to come and do a safety check on your entire electrical system. Wiring does wear out which can cause electrical fires to start in the walls and burn for some time before they become obvious. The electrical industry is always designing newer and better materials that increase the safety of your home.
  • Never touch electrical appliances or switches with wet hands, ensure electrical appliances in your bathroom do not fall into water and keep extension cords and portable appliances away from the bath or pool.
  • No wiring should be exposed from behind outlet and switch cover plates. Make sure your outlets have outlet covers throughout the entire house including the basement and garage. Replace cracked or broken covers and then cover unused outlets with plastic plugs. This is one area the homeowner can safely do it yourself and protect your children and pets from accidentally touching live wires.
  • Never try to extinguish an electrical fire with water. Make sure you have approved fire extinguishers in your kitchen, garage and laundry room and know how to use them. Make sure everyone in the family knows how to manually turn off the electricity if needed.
  • Never use bulbs that have higher wattage than recommend for the lamp or light fixture and take caution when using halogen lamps. These lamps operate at high temperatures and can create a fire hazard so keep them away from curtains, rugs or other furnishings that are flammable.
  • If fuses blow, circuit breakers trip, switches get hot or people are shocked, something is wrong. Don’t put off getting a reputable licensed electrician to come fix the problem.

Spring Cleaning Tips!!

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

We all know how overwhelming Spring Cleaning can be. Below are some tips, to make this process easier:

Work from the top down, inside to outside, to avoid getting what you just cleaned dirty again.

Do one room, at a time to avoid unfinished jobs. Spring cleaning can be very overwhelming, so if you break the home up it does not seem to be as bad. The satisfaction of seeing one room sparkle will make the hard work feel like it's worth the effort.

When tidying, reduce trips around the house by temporarily depositing items in one spot en route to but not at their final destination.

Do two things at once.

While laundry is going, scrub the shower stall.

Make small repairs. If you're not handy, hire someone.

Invest in good rubber or vinyl gloves to protect your hands.

Dust before vacuuming or cleaning the floor. Use extendable dusters for reaching above window and door casings and into corners. Household rags are invaluable for jobs requiring a damp cloth (natural fibers work best.)

Buy mops with a squeeze mechanism and a decent size heavy duty bucket. One with a measuring scale helps get soap-to-water ratios correct.

Don't stand your brooms on their bristles. It will destroy their shape and diminish their effectiveness. A solution to this issue is to get a broom holder, like the Magic Holder 5-position broom organizer.

Use a Swiffer for light dusting, or your favorite broom or vacuum attachment to clean hardwood floors. Then damp-mop with a mild cleaner such as Murphy Oil Soap.

Apartment Fire Safety

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

When you're living in an apartment setting, fire can be hazardous to not only you, but each of the other families that are residing there. Here are three top key points to remember when dealing with a fire in your apartment, or town home!

First off, prevention is key! Be sure to guard all flammable materials, especially cigarettes and candles. Also, watch for electrical hazards like fraying chords and overloaded power strips. When too may items are plugged into one outlet the source can over heart, spark, and result in a fire.

Secondly, be sure that all fire detectors have working batteries and are always ON. There should be working fire detectors on every floor of your residence, especially in the bedroom in case a fire should occur at night. The more detectors, the more possible alarms to alert your family.

Lastly, be sure your family has an escape plan figured out in the event of any emergency or crisis. A person is less likely to panic or freeze when there is a set plan in motion. Being active and alert during a crisis betters the outcome!

Fire Safety for Business Owners

6/5/2017 (Permalink)

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home.

1. Watch your cooking - Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Never allow young children around the stove or oven, especially if they are not closely attended.

2. Give space heaters space - Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.

3. Smoke outside - If you must smoke inside, have a sturdy, deep ashtray. Never smoke in bed.

4. Keep matches and lighters out of reach - Keep matches and lighters in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.

5. Inspect electrical cords - Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

6. Be careful when using candles - Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow them out before you leave the room or go to sleep.

7. Have a fire escape plan - Make a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

8. Install smoke alarms - Install alarms on every level of your office or home and inside bedrooms. Interconnect them so they all sound at once.

9. Test smoke alarms - Test alarms once per month. Replace batteries once per year or as needed.

10. Install sprinklers - Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance of saving your property.

6 Steps to Preventing Mold Growth

6/5/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO has released a report on the six steps to help prevent the growth of mold after water damage has occurred

14,000 people daily are affected by water damage. It is important to know how to eliminate conditions in which may cause mold to grow and spread.

All homeowners who have recently experienced water damage should be concerned about mold, as it can grow rapidly. The sooner an infestation is taken care of, the better.

Here are six tips to help reduce the likelihood of mold growth:

Remove the water as quickly as possible.

Use a wet or dry vacuum to soak up as much water as possible. This limits the possibility for the mold to grow.

Use fans to dry the floors and carpets faster.

It may take several days for fans to completely dry water damage. Leave them on constantly for at least a few weeks to help circulate cool and fresh air as well as speed up the drying process.

Dehumidify the affected room.

Mold grows in moist, warm and dark areas. Dehumidifying the room helps cool the air and limit mold and mildew growth. Any equipment you can use to dry the air and ground will be useful in mold prevention. Don't have proper equipment? Easy- call SERVPRO to help dry out your home.

Steam-clean your carpet.

Steam-clean any and all carpets to properly sanitize and wipe out any spores which may have started growing. Any water-damaged carpet padding may need to be replaced, but is still much cheaper than having to entirely re-carpet the house.

Sanitize walls and baseboards.

Anything that has been touched by storm water should immediately be sanitized. Clean any hardwood floors, walls, or other surfaces with soap, water, chlorine, and bleach to minimize mold growth.

Lastly, check affected furniture for any signs of mold growth that may have begun

Check all furniture for water damage, and remove the furniture from wet flooring. Water damage may hide itself under carpets or rugs, so be sure to thoroughly inspect the home.

Even following the above steps, it is likely that a mold infestation may still be present in the home. If any visible signs of mold are noticed, then an infestation/colonization has occurred. For any extensive mold damage situations, it is best to call SERVPRO!

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes!

3/30/2017 (Permalink)

Every homeowner’s nightmare is waking up to water damage from frozen pipes in the Winter! If you take these few simple, proactive measures it can protect your pipes and your home from this risk. SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly, & Richmond Counties are committed to providing efficient and thorough water restoration services to families in North Carolina, while also educating people about ways to prevent water damage in the first place.

Here, they share four crucial tips to prevent your pipes from freezing this winter:

  • Leave The Heat On When You’re Out Of Town: While it might be tempting to turn off the heat when you go out of town to cut down on your energy bill, don’t do it. You should set your heat to at least 55 degrees to keep your pipes from freezing.
  • Close Your Garage Doors: If you have a garage, keep the garage doors closed as much as possible during the winter to preserve heat. This will help any water lines that go through the garage from reaching dangerously low temperatures.
  • Let Your Faucet Drip: When it’s extremely cold outside, turn on any faucets connected to exposed pipes to just a drip. Having water run continually through the pipes reduces the risk of your pipes freezing.
  • Open Cabinet Doors: In many homes, plumbing lines run near cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom. Keeping your cabinet doors open when temperatures are freezing helps warm air circulate around your plumbing.

When temperatures plumet, protect your home from the risk of your pipes freezing and causing significant water damage to your home. Call (704) 474-7190 to speak to an experienced professional at SERVPRO of Anson, Stanly & Richmond Counties about how to reduce the risk of frozen pipes!

Importance of Mold Remediation

2/23/2017 (Permalink)

Photo shows visible mold on walls.

Exposure to mold and repairs after damage related to mold can be quite costly both to the health of you and your family, plus your home itself. If you know the warning signs and what kind of damage to look for, however, it is possible to catch a mold problem before it causes property damage that is widespread, or even serious adverse health effects.

Warning Signs of Mold Damage

Mold needs the right conditions to start growing and creating mold damage to your structure. The growth of mold will begin when a spore reaches an area which has enough moisture, the right temperature range, and a food source. Paper sheathing, insulation, wood moldings, carpeting or ceiling tiles all can act as sources of food for mold.

If you believe you have a mold problem, the earlier you contact a professional remediation company such as SERVPRO, the better chance you have at preventing or reducing widespread damage. There are several physical warning signs that can lead you to have your home checked for a possible mold infestation. These can include:

  • Visible growth of mold
  • Water stains or discoloration on internally facing ceilings or walls
  • Water stains or discoloration on externally facing walls
  • Musty odor
  • Areas of condensation or standing water on walls, floors or window sales

Damages from Mold Exposure

If mold is left untreated, it will grow and spread, creating a variety of problems including physical damage to the structure itself, plus the contents of your home.

Structural components and building materials: Mold can cause major structural damage to your home since it feeds on and breaks down matter of organic origin. When mold infests insulation, walls, carpeting, or paper backing, these materials, therefore, need to be removed. Clean up, and removal can be a big inconvenience, but our staff at SERVPRO will work thoroughly and quickly so your home is back to normal as soon as possible.

Personal property: Besides causing structural damage, mold could destroy property inside your home. When mold adheres to personal property, it can be quite difficult or even impossible to clean. Many times, the item must be disposed of since the spores cannot be totally removed.

Ventilation and heating systems: Mold might also enter ventilation and heating systems. A lot of sections of the system could be inaccessible for a visible cleaning or inspection, so that is again where our technicians at SERVPRO can help. It is very important that ventilation and heating systems be thoroughly cleaned since spores can use the systems as ways to get to other areas of your home. If it cannot be cleaned or a moisture problem cannot be fixed, the entire system might have to be removed and replaced.

Be Prepared for Fire Emergencies

2/23/2017 (Permalink)

No one can predict when an emergency will arise. More than one third of fire home deaths occur as a result of fires where no alarms are present. Most of these smoke alarm failure are usually the result of missing, disconnected, or dead batteries.

Here are some tips to keep in mind that could prevent a fire disaster from occurring in your home:

-National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house
-Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button
-Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year
-Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Emergencies can happen 24/7/365. Keep you and your loved ones safe all year round.
